Jaguar is a British car brand that was created in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company. The company was founded by William Walmsley and William Lyons. Jaguar cars manufacture luxury sedans, saloons, convertibles, SUVs and crossovers in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. They’re best known for their large luxury cars driven by world leaders and businessmen. Jaguar headquarters are currently in Whitley, Coventry, England, Great Britain.
Jaguar Company Timeline – History
1922 – Founded by William Lyons and William Walmsley, originally called Swallow Sidecar Company. The company started manufacturing motorcycle sidecars.
1945 – The Swallow Sidecar Company changed their name to Jaguar. The SS from their former name was too close to German’s SS troops which were reviled at the time.
1989 – Ford Motor Company buys Jaguar.
1999 – Ford puts the Jaguar marque in their stable of brands under the Premier Automotive Group.
2008 – The Indian car makers Tata Motors buys the Jaguar car company from Ford. The Tata Group creates the British registered “Jaguar Land Rover” holding company after purchasing the two famous marques from Ford (Land Rover and Jaguar cars).
2018 – The Jaguar I-Pace is first produced. It’s a compact SUV crossover battery electric vehicle.
2019 – The Jaguar I-Pace wins the European Car of the Year award. It’s the first time that Jaguar has done this in the fifty year history of the prestigious auto prize. It goes on to win many other car awards and accolades worldwide.
