Maserati is an Italian car brand that was founded on the 1st of December, 1914 in Bologna, Italy. The company was founded by the Italian automotive engineer Alfieri Maserati. The Maserati brothers were all involved in the company (Alfieri, Ettore, and Ernesto Maserati). Maserati manufactures sedans, coupes, and SUV vehicles. They’re best know for their luxury sports cars and SUVs. Maserati headquarters are currently in Modena, Italy in Europe.
Maserati Company Timeline – History
1914 – Società Anonima Officine Alfieri Maserati was founded in December of 1914 by the Maserati brothers Alfieri, Ettore and Ernesto. They started making spark plugs and supplied parts for aircraft engines during World War I.
The Maserati brothers were producing Grand Prix cars for the Italian manufacturing company Diatto.
1926 – The Diatto company ceased production of racing cars, causing the Maserati brothers to produce their own vehicles under the Maserati brand. Their first car to wear the now famous Trident logo was called the Tipo 26.
1926 – Alfieri Maserati wins the 1926 Targa Florio car race with one of the first Maserati cars.
1932 – Alfieri Maserati died at just 44 years of age. The brothers Bindo, Ernesto, and Ettore kept the Italian automotive company going after Alfieri’s passing.
1937 – The 3 brothers to still own shares in the company Bindo, Ernesto and Ettore Maserati sold out to the Adolfo Orsi family company. They continued to work on the engineering team at Maserati for the next 10 years.
1940 – Orsi moves the Maserati headquarters from Bologna to Modena, Italy where it remains today.
1957 – Famous Argintinian racing car driver Juan-Manuel Fangio won the Formula one world championship in a Maserati 250F.
1963 – The Maserati Quattroporte was first produced. Quattroporte means 4 doors in Italian. It’s a full size luxury sports saloon car.
1968 – Maserati was bought by the French car maker Citroën.
1975 – The Benelli motorcycle company acquired Maserati after struggling financially for several years. Alessandro de Tomaso took charge of the company.
1993 – Fiat bought Maserati and invested heavily in the company.
1997 – The Fiat controlled Ferrari bought a 50% share in Maserati.
1999 – Ferrari takes full control of the Maserati company.
2005 – Fiat took control of Maserati.
2007 – The Maserati brand made a profit for the first time in 17 years for the Fiat company.
2013 – The Maserati Ghibli is first produced. This is a mid sized executive car.
2016 – The Maserati Levante was first produced by the Italian car company. It a luxury SUV crossover all wheel drive vehicle.
